New Truth or New Understanding?

When Jesus was being judged by Pilate, the question of truth was raised.  Wikipedia has this definition: “Truth is most often used to mean being in accord with fact or reality, or fidelity to an original or to a standard or ideal.”

In our booklet “The Authority of the Bible,” on pages 4 and 5, we read the following:

“THE BIBLE PROVES ITSELF! Human interpretation is not the final authority when it comes to the Word of God! But that is exactly how those who selectively pick and choose what they want to believe, view the Bible. It is also the position taken by so many who simply reject the Bible.

“… how can we know what is true and what is false?

“Jesus Christ made an utterly profound statement in answer to Pilate’s questioning: ‘Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice”’ (John 18:37). Jesus Christ Himself bore witness of the Word of God, and that included the Holy Scriptures—the Old Testament at that time. The prophecies of His birth, death and resurrection proved to be true!…

“Truth—as opposed to falsehood and deception—was the focus of what Jesus taught. He made this statement to the Jews of His day, many of whom were the religious leaders of the nation: ‘And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free’ (John 8:32).”

In John 17:17 we read that Jesus prayed and asked the Father, “Sanctify them by Your truth.  Your word is truth.”   And so, we know that the Word of God, the Bible which is the Christian’s manual for life, contains all the truth that we need to know at this time.

Jesus also said: “I am the way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). The Expositor’s Greek Testament observes that Christ was conveying the following thoughts:

“I do not merely point out the way and teach the truth and bestow life, but I am the way and the truth and the life, so that by attachment to me one necessarily is in the way and possesses the truth and the life.”

The commentary continues:

“‘The way’ here referred to is the way to the Father. He is the goal of all human aspiration: and there is but one way to the Father… [the ‘truth’ is] primarily about God and the way to Him, but also as furnishing us with all knowledge which we now require for life.”

And so, having very briefly established that everyone who is of the truth hears Jesus’ voice; that Jesus is “the way and the truth and the life”; and that God’s Word (the Bible) is truth, let me ask the question: “Are we acquiring new truth or new understanding?”

We can read through Church history that the true Church of God survived through each century, but it had sometimes lost a lot of knowledge and understanding.   When Mr Herbert W Armstrong was called in the late 1920’s, the fruits showed that God used him to restore many doctrines that the early New Testament Church had kept, but which the Church of God down through the centuries had lost. But it is clear to see that this was not new truth, but new or better understanding.

Winston Churchill once said: “TRUTH is incontrovertible.  Panic may resent it; ignorance may deride it; malice may distort it; but THERE IT IS!” Over the years many have mentioned “new truth,” but the truth has always been there.  It was the understanding of the truth—and the love for the truth–that was lost. In 2 Thessalonians 2:9-10 we read a warning:  “The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power signs, and lying wonders, and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved.”

We not only have to have the truth in the first place, but we also have to have – and retain – the love of that truth.

Let us return to the original question, “New Truth or New Understanding?” The answer should be clear by now; the truth has been there all the time, but it is new or better understanding that all need to embrace who accept their calling from God.

The Value of the 10 Commandments

The wise person will receive God’s Commandments which outline God’s way of life.   The fool will not!    If everyone on earth kept just one of the Ten Commandments today, the whole world would be so very much a better place. What a difference it would make.   When Jesus Christ sets up the Kingdom of God on earth, all 10 of the Commandments will be kept and the world will be a completely different place than today – and so much better for it!

To Sigh and Cry

In the Kingdom of God, there will be no more need to “cry and sigh” but for the time being there is this necessity. Let us continually cry and sigh for the abominations that are all around us as God instructs us so that we can be a part of His family, and the Kingdom of God FOREVER!

The Scourge of Cancer Beaten at Last!

A while ago when I was musing on the prayer requests that we have, I thought particularly of someone who had cancer.   It is not a new disease to me and my family.   My maternal grandmother died of cancer; my mother died of liver cancer; and my wife had ovarian cancer twenty-five years ago from which she has fully recovered.  We have known a number of church members and personal friends who have been hit by this dreadful disease.

One report on the internet stated that “Each year nearly 300,000 people are diagnosed with cancer in the UK.  It has been estimated that more than 1 in 3 people (33%) will develop cancer at some point in their lifetime.  Cancers can occur at any age, but the risk of developing cancer increases with age.”

At this time I was reading a book which wrote about chemicals and their effect on health.  It said: “We typically assume that somebody else is minding the shop, making sure all these chemicals are safe.   Yet the truth is that out of 75,000 chemicals now in common commercial use, only about 1,200 to 1,500 have been tested for carcinogenicity.   Dr Sandra Steingraber writes in her book ‘Living Downstream’ that ‘the vast majority of commercially used chemicals were brought to market before 1979, when federal legislation mandated the review of new chemicals.   Thus many carcinogenic environmental contaminants likely remain unidentified, unmonitored, and unregulated.’”

The book also pointed out that the average American hosts up to 500 different chemicals in his or her body.

All of this reminded me of an article that was printed in “The Millennial Times” – a magazine in full color for the Feast of Tabernacles that we produced and published a couple of years ago, where brief articles were written about how it will be after the return of Christ in the Kingdom of God.   One article was entitled “Chemical Companies Out of Business” by Phyllis Bourque, which stated the following (amongst other comments):

“At last, the chemical companies have permanently met their demise!   After being destroyed in the last great war, the facilities that produced such deadly poisons will NOT be rebuilt!   In the meantime, the ruling God Family has effectively neutralized the effects of thousands of years of poisoning the air, the water, the land, the vegetation, and all living creatures.

“The land , which had been drenched with poison in the form of ‘pesticides’ and ‘fertilizers,’ has been decontaminated and restored to the Creator’s specifications so that it can sustain all life – plant, animal and human.”

There will be no more cancer and other diseases, caused by man’s misuse of the earth and him ignoring the instruction that was given in Genesis 2:15: “The LORD God placed the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to tend and keep it.”   Down through the last 6,000 years, man has generally, with few exceptions, ignored that instruction and greatly to his detriment.

We will be keeping the Feast of Tabernacles soon, which pictures the coming Kingdom of God.   And we can rejoice that in the Kingdom, there will no longer be any chemicals or contaminants that, today, cause so much pain and suffering through cancer and other illnesses.   We will be able to look forward to a time when man will no longer have dominion over the earth under the sway of Satan.

What a joy it will be when God—His ruling Family—hold sway!

What is a Family?

There is so much confusion about the definition of a family today where secular society, governments and politicians have made up their own definitions, and so this question is not quite as simple as it might at first seem.

Marriage and the family have been generally accepted for a long time that they are the building blocks on which a stable society is founded.   However, attitudes have changed; the liberal society with its permissiveness has invaded every nook and cranny of society and, instead of looking for inspiration and direction from the Word of God, most countries now find themselves overtaken by secularism.   God is generally excluded from any discussions about right and wrong, with man making up his own definitions.

One UK politician said that a family was any group of people who lived together.   That was something that he thought up without consulting the Holy Bible.   That means that he (and others) would consider that homosexuals living together would be a family, as would be two lesbians. Co-habiting would also fall, erroneously, into that same category.   Any group, however made up, would be a family!   And politicians who make such ridiculous assertions are those who frame our laws!

On the BBC News Channel on 6th November 2007 it had an article “The UK family: In statistics” and quoted the following:

“Families are changing shape and facing up to new lifestyle challenges. The facts and figures below give an idea of what the typical UK family looks like in the early 21st century.

“WHAT IS A ‘TYPICAL’ FAMILY?

“There were 17.1 million families in the UK in 2006 – up from 16.5 million in 1996.  Most were still headed by a married couple (71%), although the proportion of cohabiting couple families had increased to 14%, from 9% 10 years earlier.”

Of course, since that time, laws have been passed to legalise same-sex marriage which is a contradiction in terms.   Marriage as God ordained it is between a man and a woman (Genesis 2:24).

The official site of PruHealth states: “Civil unions are now permitted in Western countries, but for nearly a thousand years marriage in the Western world was a religious contract. The Christian church undertook its supervision in the 9th cent., when newlywed couples instituted the practice of coming to the church door to have their union blessed by the priest. Eventually the church regulated marriage through canon law.”

To shed further light on this issue, one of our Q&A’s asks and answers the question: “Is it a Biblical obligation or merely a Church tradition that God’s ministry officiate during a wedding or burial of Church members?”

Whilst there is much confusion, even argument and debate in society about the definition of a family, the Bible can give us clarity with real clear-cut answers.

The Creator God Who created man in His own image gave a blueprint in His instruction manual for mankind in order to enjoy life and live happily.  The general definition of a family used to be “A fundamental social group in society typically consisting of one or two parents and their children.”   We must further add that those parents should be married as the Bible clearly teaches that “living together” without being married is sin.   There are many verses in the Bible that condemn fornication (see 1 Corinthians 6:18; Galatians 5:19; Ephesians 5:3; Colossians 3:5; 1 Thessalonians 4:3; and many other references).

It is clear that marriage is between a man and a woman who then have children.   That group is a family.   Of course with the divorce rate so high, a spouse can be left on his or her own to bring up any children from that union.   That of course is still a family.

Those who are reared in a family where Christianity is a strong influence will, in general, tend to be so minded but those who are not brought up in a family with those same core values may very well adopt a secular position.   We know that there are examples where this does not apply but often they would be in a minority.   In Proverbs we read: “Train a child in the way that he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6).

Parents are to heed the words of Deuteronomy 6:6-9: “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart.   You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.   You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.   You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.”

In a family environment, parents (or a parent) can teach their children the right way to go and how to follow the ways of God.   We read in Proverbs 13:1: “A wise son heeds his father’s instruction, But a scoffer does not listen to rebuke.”   There are many other wise admonitions about family life in the book of Proverbs.

“The Christian Home” is the sub-heading of Colossians 3:18-21, showing the duties and responsibilities of family members, wives, husbands and children: “Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.  Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them.   Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord.  Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.”

One on-line commentator made these observations: “All Christians believe families are important. Many Christians believe that the family is the best place for having, and raising children. They believe God intended the family to be a place where children can be raised in a loving and supportive environment. They also believe parents should raise their children to learn about, and believe in God. The love that family members show to each other, should show how much God loves everyone. Many Christians believe that parents play an important role in showing their children, and non-family members, how much God loves and cares for them.”

The five cardinal sins of Rome—and of all past great nations—are described in Edward Gibbon’s work “The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire” (1788). The first of these five reasons was “the increase of divorce and breakdown of the family.”   It happened then and it is happening again now.

We read in Hebrews 2:9-11 the following: “But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honour, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone. For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.  For both He who sanctifies and those who are being sanctified are all of one, for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren.”

This passage, written by the apostle Paul, shows that Jesus “is not ashamed to call them brethren.”   This clearly shows that true Christians are of the same family – the God Family.

God is a Family now.   In our free booklet “God is a Family” the following is taken from page 1: “The Bible reveals that God is not just a single being, but is comprised of two separate beings. These two beings are often referred to as the ‘Father’ and the ‘Son,’ illustrating the fact that God is actually a Family. While the Bible reveals that God is, in fact, a Family, it also shows that God is not a trinity. The Holy Spirit is not God, nor is it a separate being within the God Family. It is literally the power of God through which the God Family works.”

If Satan the devil can confuse society as to what a family is, he will be able to hide the fact that Spirit-born members can become part of the God Family.   Revelation 19:7-9 states the following about the marriage between Christ and His Church: “Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb [Jesus Christ, compare Revelation 5:1-14] has come, and His wife [the Church, compare Ephesians 5:31-32] has made herself ready. And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. Then he said to me, ‘Write: “Blessed are those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!”‘…”   Satan wants to distract and divert those called by God by causing confusion as to how much marriage matters and what a family is.

The last three paragraphs in this booklet are very instructive and read as follows:

“We would like to encourage our readers to read or re-read our free booklet, ‘The Gospel of the Kingdom of God,’ which proves from the Bible that it is indeed the potential of man to enter the kingdom of God—by becoming a member of the Family of God.

“The very last book of the Bible tells us the destiny of those who become born again members, that is, Spirit beings-God beings-in the God Family. We read in Revelation 3:12, ‘He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he shall go out no more. I will write on him the name of My God.’ They will receive God’s name—they will enter the very Family of God as born again spirit beings. Revelation 22:4 confirms this, ‘They shall see His face, and His name shall be on their foreheads.’ At that time, they will be truly ‘born again’—and not before then. At that time, they will truly have inherited ‘all things.’

“Yes, God IS a Family—and He wants YOU to truly become a born again member of His Family—His spiritual offspring. This is the reason WHY you were born. Just imagine YOUR awesome potential and destiny-to become, and to be named, GOD!”

The family, as correctly defined, is vital to a healthy society today.   For even more information, please also read our free booklet, “The Keys to Happy Marriages and Families!”

In the future, in the Kingdom of God, all those who are saved and changed from physical into spirit will be a member of the Family of God forever!

Moving Ground

After the general election in the UK in May 2015, two of the defeated political parties licked their wounds and counted the cost.  Defeat for both the Labour party and the Liberal Democrats forced them to review what they stood for and how they could regain much lost ground.   New leaders were to be elected and it was acknowledged that, after the electorate had dealt them such a savage blow with the Conservatives securing an outright win, a new approach from them would be needed.

I read one definition on the internet that stated that “A political party voluntary, organised, possesses beliefs and translates these into policies or legislation.  It also assumes that political parties have a set of core beliefs which may change slowly over time.”

Core beliefs may change over time?   That’s a very dangerous position to be in if it applies to our Christian lives, but apparently in political circles no problem is seen in making changes that may not necessarily agree with their party but is to their political advantage.

Tony Blair won three elections by moving the Labour party from the left of the political spectrum to the centre ground, but when he gave way to others, it appeared that this approach was abandoned, resulting in two subsequent election defeats.   Mr Blair did this by various methods, one of which was through “focus groups” who gave the feedback as to what they thought the country wanted.   It was a case of “we are the leaders but tell us what we need to do so that we can be in charge.”   In other words, we will lead from the rear!

Political commentators state that it must now be on the agenda of defeated parties to move back to the centre ground if they are to be electable again.   It is not so much a matter of what they necessarily believe in, more in how they can be elected to form a government to run the country.   They are short on principle in their pursuit of power.   Where are the conviction politicians?

In fact, whatever happened to principles, where politicians inform the electorate what they stand for and believe in, not just what will put them into power?   Where are those who spell out their core beliefs, not what they are told will enhance their chances of political power?

What ground do they stand on?   In such situations, the ground moves and they move with it, purely to get their hands on the reins of power – yet another reason why we, as Christians, don’t vote or get involved with politics!

In 1995, in our former association, the ground moved.   We were asked “who moved?”, but the one asking the question was the one moving!   If we stand on firm ground, we will not move ground.   Unfortunately, so many at that time seemed not to be grounded in the truth and they moved.   Those of us who refused to give way to error stayed on the ground which we had proved to be solidly based on the truth of God.

Politicians can move to the left, centre or to the right of politics, but that is because of advantage to them in their pursuit of power and influence.   We, as members of the Body of Christ, must not move in any direction except forward towards the Kingdom of God, and, to achieve that goal, we have to make sure we are not on moving ground.

Just solid ground!

Should a Christian Use Hypnosis?

This is a hotly disputed issue with so many opinions on this subject.   One of the reasons is that the word “hypnosis” or “hypnotism” is not mentioned once in the Word of God.  However, for a Christian, the Bible is the yardstick by which any matter should be judged, and we should look for principles that apply in this case.

The Free Dictionary online gives this definition of hypnosis:

“The induction of a state of consciousness in which a person apparently loses the power of voluntary action and is highly responsive to suggestion or direction. Its use in therapy, typically to recover suppressed memories or to allow modification of behaviour, has been revived but is still controversial.”

Another online definition, from http://www.compellingtruth.org/Christian-hypnosis.html, is as follows:

“Hypnosis is a process by which critical thinking is diminished and internal visualization is greatly heightened. It has been used to decrease the sensation of pain and the desire for an addiction, as well as the subconscious reaction that leads to fear. It’s also been used in entertainment to temporarily convince people of things that aren’t true. There are different types.  There has been talk among Christians that hypnosis may open the mind to demonic influence. We don’t know how this works, exactly, but it is possible. When a person’s critical-thinking and decision making skills are turned off and their internal imagination cranked up, they are more susceptible to lies and harmful influences.”

As an example of divergent opinions, Christian Medical Fellowship published these “two sharply contrasting articles from Christians about hypnosis”:

Norman Vaughton wrote:

“As a Christian… I use my mind with all its strange and wonderful potential, in all its different states of consciousness, and with all its different functions, hopefully for good – and that includes the whole fascinating, mysterious and wonderful area of hypnotic effects. They are as much God created and open to use and abuse as any other function of creation. I also know that frequently during hypnotic sessions I will suddenly be filled with an awareness that what I am doing is something of therapy, something of hypnosis, and something of prayer, and they are all so much entwined and the same that I do not really believe any separation would be possible; and of the presence of God I am utterly certain.”

“A. D. Bambridge, a qualified male nurse with a BSc, was concerned that when psychological defences were lowered during hypnosis, there was a considerable risk of demons entering the psyche. He believed the roots of hypnosis were occult and ruled it out absolutely for Christians, concluding: ‘Whilst hypnosis and its use in hypnotherapy seem merely to be the input by the hypnotist of ideas into the subconscious of a subject in a heightened state of suggestibility, I would contend that this art of psychic manipulation is in fact of demonic origin. Though these roots of hypnosis are now obscured by an undergrowth of scientific jargon, it remains a dangerous activity to anyone involved.’”

One biblical reference in Deuteronomy 18:11 has been used in respect to hypnosis.  The Hebrew word which is translated “charmer,” or “one who conjures spells” may refer foremost to snake charmers (compare Psalm 58:4-5). On the other hand, in connection with the other terms used, such as “medium,” “spiritist,” “soothsayer” and “sorcerer” as well as the practice of “witchcraft” (compare verse 10; as well as Isaiah 19:3), the possible reference to hypnotists and hypnosis cannot be easily dismissed, as will be explained below.

We know that Satan is “the god of this age” (2 Corinthians 4:4) and “the prince of the power of the air”, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience” (Ephesians 2:2), and that he wants to destroy the faith of God’s people. In his book “Mystery of the Ages,” Mr Herbert Armstrong in the chapter “Mystery of Angels and Evil Spirits” writes the following:

“In Ephesians 6 it is stated that our contentions and strivings are in fact not with other human beings but against ‘principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness (evil spirits) in high places’ (see verse 12).   How can this be?   Why is the world filled with such clashings and contentions with human minds?   In Ephesians 2:2, humans have been walking ‘according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air (Satan), the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience.’   People simply do not realise that there is an invisible spirit power injecting into their minds these hostile attitudes.”

We have long understood that Satan broadcasts his wrong attitudes. And he can certainly transfer ideas and thoughts without the recipient ever realising it.  The person could well assume that this was all from himself without anyone else being involved; that is how clever and subtle Satan is, and can be.

In our booklet Angels, Demons and the Spirit World on pages 43 and 44, the following is written:

“Sorcery, witchcraft, hypnosis, and certain meditation practices are further methods of Satan to overpower the mind of a human being and to make him or her into a helpless victim. Whenever we give ourselves ‘over’ to another influence, we have become victims of the powers of darkness.”

On page 43 of the same booklet, we read:

“Though many people don’t believe in the existence of Satan and demons, they are quick to dabble in the occult, being ignorant of the danger therein. Demons are called ‘familiar spirits’ because they want to familiarize themselves with man (Leviticus 19:31; 20:6, 27). Haunted houses, poltergeists, séances, communication with the dead, and contacts with ‘aliens’ are all clearly of demonic origin. Satan and demons are destructive. They love to torment people (Luke 6:18). Once we have made ‘contact’ with demons, we can’t get rid of them anymore, barring a miracle from God (Luke 11:24–26).”

In 1 Peter 5:8 we read: “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”  Anything that increases our own risk of spiritual infection or reduced effectiveness as a true Christian must be avoided at all costs. Willingly inviting outside influences into our minds is a dangerous thing to do.   When hypnotism takes place, the hypnotist is able to change the behaviour of the one hypnotised.   For example, those who allow themselves to be hypnotised in an entertainment capacity, on stage, are subject to some mind control as they do as requested by the hypnotist. And we must never rule out the possibility that the hypnotist is engaging in his conduct through and with the power of Satan or other demonic influence. A hypnotized person later declared that a “strong force” or “power” had taken over and compelled him to do or not do certain things.

In Acts 16:16-19 we see a clear case of demon influence.   “Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, ‘These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation.’ And this she did for many days.  But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, ‘I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.’  And he came out that very hour.  But when her masters saw that their hope of profit was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace to the authorities.”  We are not told how this happened but opening up our minds to outside influences where Satan and his demons can wield their considerable influence could lead to spiritual harm to those so doing.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law” (Galatians 5:22-23).   This is where our focus must be.   We read in Romans 8:14 that “as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God.”   We have to be led by God’s Holy Spirit, not by the influence of Satan through allowing our minds to be opened to any wrong influences, one of which can be hypnotism (compare Romans 6:12-13).

We have to present (yield) ourselves to GOD as we read in Romans 6:13, not someone who wants to gain access to our minds through hypnotism.  There are those who contend that hypnotism can be used for good as in helping people to conquer wrong habits (smoking, alcoholism, drug abuse etc) or instead of anaesthesia when this could not be used because of heart or general health problems of the patient.   This argument is very similar to the one about aborting a foetus because some abnormalities are spotted during pregnancy, but we know that this breaking the 6th Commandment (you shall not kill) is wrong and that any abortion is an abomination and is forbidden by God. (See: https://www.globalchurchofgod.co.uk/update-191/ ; compare also our discussion on abortion in our free booklet, Are You Already Born Again?” ).

Romans 6:16 reads: “Do you not know that to whom you present (yield) yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?”   It is all about controlling our own minds and not letting anyone else into that territory.   We are to yield wholly, fully and completely to God and His Will which is perfect.   Hypnosis gives away that control to another person or another spiritual entity, such as a demon influencing the hypnotist to use his power.

“Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.  Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded” (James 4:7-8).   We are to submit to God and then He will draw near to us, but submitting to a hypnotist (and/or to the spiritual demonic force using him) has the possibility of causing immense harm.

Our lives must revolve around God the Father and Jesus Christ, with both of them being right at the centre of everything we think say and do.   We yield to them and their will, as they always have our best interests at heart.   The Bible shows us the way to achieve that goal, and yielding our minds to another person or spiritual entity even if only for a few seconds or a just a minute or two is treading on very dangerous ground.

One commentator made these observations: “It’s interesting to note how critical thinking and decision-making skills guard what comes into the mind in light of Proverbs 4:23 (NIV): ‘Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.’ When we put the guards to sleep, our hearts are left undefended, which directly influences our actions. Even if the hypnotist is working for our benefit, the risk of danger is phenomenal. [We would add that a hypnotist is never working for our benefit, even though he may claim to do so.]

“Hypnosis leads to an altered state of consciousness in which the mind is very susceptible to outside suggestion. That susceptibility is what the hypnotist [or the power influencing him] needs in order to modify the behaviour of his subject. However, the word susceptible should concern us.

“Many of the techniques used in hypnosis are shared by mystical, philosophical, and religious systems, including the occult. The ‘father of hypnotism,’ Franz Anton Mesmer—from whose name we get the word mesmerize—was himself a practitioner of the occult. His method of inducing a trance was very similar to the way a medium conducts a séance. Hypnotism, along with yoga and Transcendental Meditation, has always been linked to spiritual darkness. The newfound respectability of these practices has not changed their underlying nature” (http://www.compellingtruth.org/Christian-hypnosis.html).

We must remember that Satan and his demons never sleep and are constantly looking for ways to influence us in the wrong way.  We must pray for protection from their attacks and never give in to them. It is all about controlling our own minds and not letting others have that opportunity!

The evidence seems clear enough that true Christians must not open themselves up to the possibility of any influence that could jeopardise their eternal salvation.   Using hypnosis, for whatever reason, could well allow external forces not conducive to their spiritual wellbeing having an effect that could be highly detrimental to their long term future which is a promise of eternity in the Family of God.

Indefatigable

It was probably 1997, and Holy Day services were being held in Derbyshire in the UK. Our guests that day were Colin and Margaret Adair. It would have been a time shortly after I had been appointed as office manager for the Global Church of God in the UK. In the announcements, the late and much missed Mr Adair, then the International Director for Global, said four words that I have thought about many times since. He said “The indefatigable Mr Gale” and then went on to make some further comments. Indefatigable is defined as “persisting tirelessly, tireless, untiring, never-tiring, unwearied, unwearying, unflagging.”

It was a time of quite intense activity. The office was still taking up lots of space in our home until we acquired premises the following year. Much catching up had to be done administratively. Receipts for tithes and offerings for the past year had to be issued and a template for doing so had to be devised. An office structure was planned and implemented and administration for the various video groups and churches had to be put in place. Budgets had to be set, advertising through an agency had to be negotiated and a Feast site found, approved and organised with an expected 300 to be in attendance. Booklet requests were frequent and many questions had to be answered. It was, in short, perhaps a bit more than a full time job for just one person, but I coped with all the energy that I had to make it a thoroughly efficient office. Perhaps that is why Mr Adair called me indefatigable.

Why do I mention this? I was 57 at the time and the figures are now reversed. At 75, some 18 years later, in no way could I be called “indefatigable”! In fact, were Mr Adair to make comments today, he would be well within his rights to say that I was “fatigable” – yes, there is such a word and it means subject to fatigue. I no longer have the energy of even just 18 years ago, and this is a prime example of how we change over the course of a lifetime.

Many, who were extremely fit and mobile not that long ago, may now have mobility problems that they would never have expected at a younger age. We do have to accept our limitations, whatever they may be, but with the wisdom that God can give us as we get older, this is necessary in order to adjust to, what seems to be ever changing physical parts of our life.

What lessons can we draw from what I have written above? There will be a time when all of God’s faithful people will actually become indefatigable. At the resurrection, we will be given spirit bodies and life that will never wear out  – and for eternity. No more getting older with reduced capabilities and functionality. No more tiredness and fatigue; no more illness or disease and no more physical limitations of any sort whatsoever.  “And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away” (Revelation 21:4).

It will, in short, be a time when we will all be able to say about each other in that wonderful spiritual realm that we are indefatigable in the service of God, and each other, and that it will be for all eternity!
